Caring for Your Smile after Invisalign® Treatment

August 15th, 2018

You went through a lot of effort and work to achieve your perfect smile. You wore your Invisalign aligner trays, brushed and flossed diligently, and now your treatment is done! What happens now?

In order to keep your teeth healthy and beautiful, you should keep several practices in play.

Retainers

Although everyone’s needs are different, many patients require a retainer after Invisalign treatment. If a retainer is recommended by Dr. Joel Martinez, Dr. Christopher Martinez, and Dr. Vanessa Martinez, use it as directed. Not wearing retainers could result in shifting teeth and potentially ruin your results.

It’s also recommended that you avoid hard, crunchy foods for the first few weeks as your teeth adjust. For younger patients, retainers are normally worn until the wisdom teeth come in or are extracted.

Brushing and Flossing

It should come as no surprise that flossing should still be done every day to remove plaque, which can develop into tartar or calculus. The build-up can lead to gingivitis and gum disease.

Your gums may be more sensitive for a week or two after your orthodontic work is completed. A warm saltwater rinse may relieve discomfort.

Because your teeth have been protected by your Invisalign aligners and are now fully exposed, they may be more sensitive the first few weeks after treatment. If that’s the case, we can recommend a sensitive toothpaste to relieve your discomfort. If your teeth are stained, a professional whitening treatment may be considered.

Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental exams ensure your teeth stay healthy for life. Professional cleanings, X-rays, and cavity treatment can be addressed by staying on top of your routine checkups.

If you have any questions about how to care for your teeth after your Invisalign program, please ask our McAllen team. We want you to keep your healthy smile and enjoy the results of your Invisalign treatment.

What's the best dental floss?

August 8th, 2018

Dental floss is similar to a lot of products that depend mainly on the consumer’s preference. Fact is, floss comes in a wide variety of flavors, coatings, and other variations, but all types of floss essentially do the same thing. After all, that is what is most important: that the dental floss you buy is functional—cleaning the areas in between your teeth. If you want to know what the best dental floss is, the answer is the kind that enables you to successfully and regularly clean those areas. So to help you find the right type of floss for you, here are some options.

Flavored Dental Floss

Many people that floss prefer a flavored dental floss because it freshens their breath even more than unscented floss. The latter can also take on the smells associated with bacteria in your mouth. And we all know how bad that can be. So, if flavored dental floss is what you prefer, and it allows you to floss your teeth regularly, then it is automatically best for your mouth.

Flossers

There are also products on the market called flossers, which usually consist of a plastic instrument with strung floss and a pick on the opposite end. This option can be both effective at cleaning the areas in between your teeth and scraping off plaque. These flossers also come flavored in mint and various other varieties.

Gentle Dental Floss

Some people find that typical dental floss is too harsh on their gums. For that reason some companies make floss with soft coatings that are less abrasive on the gums. For the most part these types of floss are just as effective as regular floss, and for those people that require a more sensitive approach to flossing, especially when just starting out, this is the best option.

Of the aforementioned options, it is difficult to name an absolute best type of floss. However, Dr. Joel Martinez, Dr. Christopher Martinez, and Dr. Vanessa Martinez and our team say that the type of floss that works best for you, giving you the greatest chance of succeeding at regular flossing, is the best. How to Protect Your Braces During Sports Activities

August 1st, 2018

Proper mouth protection is recommended by Joel Martinez, DDS when you participate in any sports activities. If you wear braces, this protection becomes essential. Injuries to your mouth can not only damage your teeth, but your braces could break and cut open your lip.

Full Facial Guards

Full facial guards are often used in football and offer protection to your mouth from most injuries. Even with full facial protection, you may benefit from additional mouth protection. While your face is protected from outside impact, you could still suffer from cuts or damage to your braces from internal impact.

Mouthguards

Mouthguards referred to as boil-and-bites can be purchased at many retail stores. As the name implies, these guards are boiled in water to heat and soften the material. While the guard is still warm, you place it in your mouth and bite down gently. This causes the guard to form to the shape of your mouth. Unfortunately, these guards do not necessarily offer the best protection or fit.

Dr. Joel Martinez, Dr. Christopher Martinez, and Dr. Vanessa Martinez can make custom mouthguards specifically for you. The custom fitting ensures you of better protection and a comfortable fit. Custom guards are also built in layers for durability. The American Dental Association recommends custom guards for orthodontic patients. Your mouthguard will be designed to provide proper protection for both your teeth and your braces.

No matter what type of sport you participate in, a mouthguard can protect your braces. Even an activity as seemingly harmless as table tennis can result in a contact injury. The Academy for Sports Dentistry states that a properly fitted mouthguard should not interfere with any athletic activity.

Joel Martinez, DDS will provide you with properly-fitting mouth protection to ensure the safety of your braces and your teeth. We will be glad to answer any questions you have so you can continue the activities you enjoy with little concern. If you do suffer any injuries to your mouth or braces during sporting activities, please contact us immediately. The sooner we can care for your mouth, the better the results will be.

Summer Travels at RGV Braces

July 31st, 2018

For anyone living in the South, the best summer getaway is anything and everything that involves water. Being so close to South Padre Island, and with central Texas just a drive away, any Texan knows that means two things: body surfing the waves of the Gulf of Mexico or tubing down the Guadalupe River. We’re always up for anything that gets the family outdoors and off their phones! The cool water is a perfect place to share laughter and make memories with family and friends.

While we love to travel in our beloved state of Texas, we also think it’s important to get out of your home state from time to time - and even the country! It’s the perfect opportunity to experience a different culture first hand and explore new foods and new people. Traveling can help give you a more well-rounded idea of what type of lifestyle you want to live. You never know what you’ll discover about yourself and others when traveling!

Personally, we enjoy talking to different people, hearing new accents, and engaging in interesting conversations while traveling. We also love doing outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and cycling that we don’t usually get to do at home. The furthest we’ve ever traveled is to China and we would definitely recommend it!

We also can’t go anywhere without our toothbrush, toothpaste, camera, analog watch, and journal. What can’t you travel without?

We hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and what’s left of summer before school is back in session!
